Welcome to Ophidia Fanaticus

Herpetoculture is the care and culture of reptiles and amphibians in a captive situation. It has been a growing interest among people worldwide, and presumably will be for some time to come.

For this hobby to thrive, it is important for those new to the hobby to be informed on the husbandry of their newly aquired herps. Many folks find themselves in a situation where they do not understand the complex needs about their pets, therefore the reason for this site.

Herptiles, which is the term used for the grouping of reptiles and amphibians, have different needs than what most people know about animals in general. The many new people to this hobby find themselves being informed by employees of petshops, friends and family that, for the most part, do not fully understand herps and their complex needs. This is something that needs to be inproved on.

Herps are a very delicate and complex group of the animal kingdom, and each have their own basic and individual needs that help them thrive as healthy specimens. What may work for one may not work for another. Some herps are nocturnal and some diurnal, some arboreal and some terrestrial, some foliovores and some carnivores. Not any two are exactly the same, thus a need to fully understand the needs that each species needs to survive. It should be your concern as an owner to aquire this information and strive to fulfill your duties to care for and respect herps.

In the pages of this site you will find basic information on a few common species of select reptiles, as well as interesting sites that will help you indulge in the complex world that makes this hobby so interesting. I have placed in a link some interesting forums that will allow you to discuss topics with other people, both new and experienced in herpetoculture. I have as well some caresheets on a few reptiles that I have put together as a basic form of husbandry information. I recommend that any new persons do their best to aquire as much information as possible before obtaining any animal. It would be better off for yourself and the animals in your care. Thank you for stopping by and hope you find the information useful as well as interesting.

Enjoy the site!
